Votes at 16 Inquiry - Minister Q&A
APPG Inquiry Meeting
Samantha Dixon, Minister for Building Safety, Fire and Democracy, will be attending this meeting. She will share insights into the government’s rationale for introducing votes at 16, any plans to prepare young people to vote, and explain the role schools will be expected to play in this process.
There will be plenty of time of questions and this will be a great opportunity to engage directly with the minister, raise any comments, and discuss concerns that you may have or have emerged from our oral evidence sessions.

Oral evidence session
At the meeting, several teachers and educators will give evidence on how schools currently support democratic learning and participation, as well as the barriers and opportunities to strengthening schools’ democratic role both within the curriculum and across everyday school life.

Votes at 16 - Oral Evidence Session
Oral evidence session
This meeting is the first of three oral evidence sessions as part of the APPG’s inquiry into how schools can empower and enfranchise young people in advance of the introduction of votes for 16-year-olds at the next UK general election.
Young people and representatives from four youth-focused organisations will give evidence on what democracy means to them, how schools and colleges teach about democracy and embed democratic values in everyday school life, and how this could be improved to ensure all young people are prepared for votes at 16.

Can reducing education spending on private providers protect school budgets?
APPG Meeting
At a time of unprecedented pressure on school budgets, it is more urgent than ever to ensure that public money is reaching classrooms rather than being diverted into corporate profits. Post the Comprehensive Spending Review and ahead of the Autumn Budget, continued constraints on public spending are expected. This meeting will explore how we can reduce clearly identifiable inefficiencies caused by outsourcing and marketisation in the education system through an examination of school catering and supply teaching.

‘The Missing Chapter’ and the Child Poverty Strategy
Joint meeting with the APPG for Parents
This session will explore embargoed research by Parentkind, supported by the NEU, on parental and family experiences of poverty. The findings highlight the hidden costs of schooling as a critical child poverty issue and recommend its inclusion in the upcoming Child Poverty Strategy.
